I’m going to make this as plain as day for you as I’m a little tired of making excuses for others. Philmont’s debut full length release, Attention, has quite a bit of interesting, fun, diverse pop punk songs that I’ve heard done better by at least three other bands and I’m just over what pop punk has become. This is called regression. There is nothing technically done poorly by Philmont within what they do, but the lyricism based on play on words has become so cliche within this genre that this is nothing more than white noise to me. If I wanted this I’d either go listen to old Relient K or possibly Eleventyseven, or if I was desperate I’d listen to some Everyday Sunday, but this is becoming a bit much. Attention covers a lot of ground and is surely going to be very edifying and inspirational to a younger crowd that might not be familiar with the half dozen other bands that play the same style and write with the same quirkiness, but I’ve just about had it.
If you, however, haven’t had enough of this, then there is plenty to grab onto. It could be in the form of their allegory type tales of “Hello, Jack” or “My Hippocratic Oath” or their stripped down tracks of “Another Name”, “Letter to the Editor” and the more artistic “The Terminal”, but either way there are several well written, enthusiastic, songs that you can bring home with you.
Philmont doesn’t shy away from talking about real issues and making sure to point people to where there eyes belong, thought they do tend to sound so sugary that it is hard to hear any agonizing depth of reality. I don’t mean to be so hard on this band, it isn’t like they do a terrible job, but as I’m getting old and as I hear more and more music, I want something deeper, more personal and a whole lot more original.
