hello hurricaneSwitchfoot - Hello Hurricane

Hello Hurricane is the upcoming seventh studio album from alternative rock band Switchfoot, and the first of four albums produced in the same sessions. It was co-produced by the band and Mike Elizondo, after initial test runs with producers such as Ken Andrews and Charlie Peacock. The album was recorded mainly in their studio in their hometown of San Diego, California. It was originally to be released on October 6, 2009, but has since been pushed back to November 10, 2009 on their independent record label, the Atlantic-distributed lowercase people records.

The song "Hello Hurricane" was first debuted at a May 8, 2009 concert in Visalia, California. The band played a preview of the album version of the song through the PA system for the fans to hear. One fan recorded the song and posted it online, providing listeners with the first taste of the band's new material.
The tracklisting was announced via the band's Twitter on June 16, and Switchfoot began unveiling the new material throughout the Summer Festival tour season, beginning with "Mess of Me," which was played live for the first time on June 18 at the Big Ticket Festival in Michigan. "Hello Hurricane" was performed in its full-band incarnation for the first time at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, Canada on June 20. "Bullet Soul" followed, live in Lancaster, PA at the American Music Theater for the first time on June 21, with "Needle and Haystack Life" debuting live at Spirit Song at King's Island in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 9. "The Sound" then was revealed on July 16th in Memphis, TN.
The band also began hosting listening parties across the United States to give fans a chance to hear the album in its entirety. Entrusting the master copy of the record to the YouTube online video content provider, Corey Vidal, fans got rare opportunities to hear Hello Hurricane during certain stops on Vidal's "Youtube Road Trip."
In September, Switchfoot released the first music video for the lead single, "Mess of Me," to YouTube. Fans were actively encouraged to promote and spread the video, and it garnered several top honors on the site.
The band also played a short string of radio shows, debuting a stripped version of "Free" at a 99x radio session on September 9. The next day, Switchfoot debuted "Always" at a show in the Ft. Lauderdale Culture Room in Florida.
Songs from "Hello Hurricane" have been featured in College Football games on ESPN. Switchfoot's music is played before commercial breaks. Songs that are frequently played are "Needle and Haystack Life", "The Sound", and "Bullet Soul"
On October 16, before the American League Championship Series Game 1 broadcast, a montage of baseball highlights was shown, while interspersed with live clips of the band and the song "Free" playing in the background.

Distribution::
Upon completion of Hello Hurricane, the band had concluded a season of independence and artistic freedom that hadn't been experienced since the band recorded The Beautiful Letdown independently. Once this season was concluded, the band began shopping around for partners to distribute the songs all across the globe, "looking for the best partner to give these songs a large platform that is respectful to the people that listen to our music." On August 7, 2009, Switchfoot announced that their independently-owned label, lowercase people records, would be partnering with Atlantic Records to distribute Hello Hurricane globally. EMI CMG will meanwhile retain the rights to release Switchfoot's material to the Christian market.

Formats::
Hello Hurricane will be distributed in several different formats and packages, as announced on switchfoot.com. Official pre-sales for the packages began on September 16, 2009.
  • Digital Download
  • Standard CD Edition
  • Vinyl (with physical CD)
  • Deluxe CD/DVD Edition
  • Collector's Deluxe Edition (includes CD/DVD/Bonus disc, a hardbound 84-page photo book, an exclusive poster, and extra bonus content)
There is also an iTunes deluxe package available, with exclusive acoustic versions and other tracks.

Jaymes Reunion – Jaymes Reunion EPJaymes Reunion - Jaymes Reunion EP

Review By Dan Harmeson::

I have this saying that listening to a band’s new recording is like reacquainting yourself with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. You get the comfort of old memories blended with the curiosity of what’s to come. Observing the ascension of Jaymes Reunion in the Christian music scene with the release of Jaymes Reunion EP is just like that.

Old friends are great, but you expect a little change to keep things interesting. Jaymes Reunion EP is a comforting appetizer which organizes previously released songs to appease the listener’s palate until the upcoming album release in 2010.

If Jaymes Reunion is a new name to you, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. Lead singer Cameron Jaymes and the rest of this four piece rock union create entertaining tracks. Catchy choruses in songs like “Fine” and “Let it Shine” suggest the group may have some longevity. The lyrics of “If You Wanna Cry” and “More Than a Day” exhibit details of deep and personal relationships, albeit not explicitly Christ-centered ones.

Jaymes Reunion EP contains two versions of “Fine”: studio and acoustic. Both are repeats from “The Fine-EP” (released in July 2008). The song has a catchy, pop driven chorus and strong Maroon 5 influences. “Fine” is one of the most contagious Christian pop songs I’ve heard in a while. They should lose the acoustic version however. It could work for an unplugged album or acoustic playlist, but the studio version is stronger.

“Let it Shine” is one of the best tracks on this release. It’s been on the airwaves now for six months and may be the group’s most recognizable song. It’s full of clear, earnest lyrics describing God’s love shining into our lives through His direction and presence.

“If You Wanna Cry” and “More Than a Day” are everything you want in acoustic songs. Lead singer Cameron Jaymes displays his vocal abilities and musicianship with a bluesy heartfelt blend of vocals, piano, and guitar. A couple of lines in these songs stretch Jaymes’s vocals, but not enough to affect the overall quality of the tracks. “If You Wanna Cry” is the only original unreleased song on the album, making it a top track on the album. The lyrics of these songs are beautiful, grabbing your ears for pure enjoyment. We can only hope that Jaymes Reunion releases more songs like this in the future.

The only substandard track on the album is “I Want You Back”. It’s hard to listen to this song and not think of the first rounds of American Idol. I’m a firm believer that some artists are virtually untouchable. Michael Jackson would be an obvious one. With the recent passing of Jackson, I think most people could do without overplayed, substandard tributes to his work, however well meaning.

At twenty three minutes long Jaymes Reunion EP feels truncated and lacking new, original content. However, new listeners will be pleasantly surprised. I feel unsatisfied, but optimistic that creative and original tracks from Jaymes Reunion are in our near future. Even though “Fine” and “Let it Shine” have been around for a while, the quality of these songs give me hope that Jaymes Reunion is ready to hit us all with fresh and inventive hits for years to come.

hawk nelsonLive Life Loud is the fourth studio album from Christian rock band Hawk Nelson. It was released on September 22, 2009. According to Daniel Biro the dog on the cover is Jason's dog Murphy, and the album will be packaged with a pair of 3D glasses that will need to be worn to view the albums CD booklet, as it will be printed in 3D. The album peaked at #54 the first week at Billboard 200 and at #3 For Christian Albums on The Billboard Charts.

Hawk Nelson's bassist Daniel Biro describes the album as; "Live Life Loud is really about encouraging our fans to do just that. To live your life loud, to embrace all that life brings your way and experience every moment of it to the fullest extent. This is the message we want our fans to come away with after they hear the album."
The album is the first time that the band wrote songs together by just jamming as a band, although the band collaborated with Chris Stevens, Matthew Gerrard, TobyMac, Trevor McNevan, and Bart Millard on the record.

Relient K – Forget and Not Slow DownRelient K – Forget and Not Slow Down

Forget and Not Slow Down is the sixth full-length studio album by American rock band Relient K, released on October 6, 2009. It is the band's first album since the departure of longtime drummer Dave Douglas at the end of 2007. Ethan Luck was his replacement as the drummer for the band. The album is also the first Relient K album with Mono Vs Stereo and their first on Jive Records. The album was produced by Mark Lee Townsend and mixed by Andy Wallace.

RELIENT K - "Forget And Not Slow Down" - Biography 2009

Sometimes the best way to deal with a break-up is to write a batch of great songs about it, turn up the amplifiers and just rock out.

Think of enduring classics – from Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville to Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine to Beck’s Sea Change – and how they achieved musical catharsis from the crumbling walls and crossbeams of a relationship gone bad.

On their latest release, Forget And Not Slow Down, Relient K carry the break-up album into the 21st century, tweaking it with clear-eyed songwriting and a four-to-the-floor optimism that is positively refreshing. Yes, there’s sweet sorrow in “If You Believe Me.” And yes, there’s lingering nostalgia in “Part Of It” and “Savannah.” There’s even the occasional recrimination, as in the bitter sting of “I Don’t Need A Soul” and “Over It.” But when it comes to regret, lead singer and songwriter Matt Thiessen is not one to wallow.

As he sings on the rousing title track, “I’d rather forget and not slow down than gather regret for the things I can’t change now.”

Not that it doesn’t take some effort of will. As Thiessen says, “It’s hard to forget and move on emotionally, but sometimes it’s better for you. You have to keep the bigger picture in mind. If you’re feeling sorry for yourself or reflecting on things that aren’t good, you’re not being productive. So to move forward is to concentrate on ‘What can I do better?’ That’s the whole idea of the record.”

The band’s guitarist Matt Hoopes agrees. “It’s about learning from mistakes and not just focusing on all the things you wished you would’ve done differently. Everyone has those things. What’s important is the knowledge that when you make a mistake, your life is not over.”

To gather material from these forward-thinking convictions, Thiessen made like Thoreau, retreating to a remote lake house in Winchester, Tennessee. “I was by myself for about two or three months, in total isolation,” he says. “It was awesome. You could think about something, and keep thinking about it, and no one would interrupt you for six or seven hours. You could keep your brain on one train of thought. I’ll never want to write another record any other way.”

For Thiessen, the solitary creative process was a lot like prayer. “Songwriting and praying are kind of synonymous for me,” he says. “You’re using your heart, you’re using your brain, you’re collecting your thoughts, inner emotions, and putting them all together, and you’re saying, ‘Where does this all fit into my life?’”

During his sojourn, Thiessen stayed in constant contact with Hoopes and the rest of the band – drummer Ethan Luck, bassist John Warne and guitarist Jon Schneck - sharing song ideas and mapping out a direction for the album. One guiding principle soon emerged: this record should rock.

Reteaming with long-time producer Mark Townsend (“We’ve got an almost telepathic relationship,” Hoopes says. “He’s family”), the band brought the spontaneity and revved-up spirit of their live performances into the studio. On such standout songs as “Therapy,” “Candlelight” and “This Is The End,” their trademark blend of sweet melodicism and caffeinated pop-punk has never sounded as urgent and powerful.

The album was mixed by ace engineer Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Sheryl Crow), who ups the ante even further by imbuing the songs with widescreen grandeur and crunching clarity.

“We definitely wanted to make a rock record,’” Thiessen confirms. “We wanted it to be uptempo and energetic. As far as the sonic aspect, we wanted to make it less modern sounding, with classic rock textures - Counting Crows, Foo Fighters, those kind of ‘90s albums. That was a good time for rock ‘n’ roll.”

It was also a time before computers took up permanent residency in recording studios. Thiessen says, “A lot of bands use MIDI and synthesizers – fake instruments. We have too. But on this record, everything you hear is really played. It’s organic. I know a lot of bands do that now. But for us, it was really the first time we made it the real thing.”

That humble claim aside, Relient K has been making the real thing since 1997, when Thiessen and Hoopes formed the band in high school. In the decade since, they’ve released five full-length albums (three are certified Gold), five EPs and a Christmas record, toured the globe, and racked up several hit singles, a Grammy nomination, two Dove Awards and performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’ Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live. The Los Angeles Times has praised Relient K for “its smart blend of punk pop and power pop, weaving together influences as diverse as the Beach Boys, Blink-182 and Fountains of Wayne” while Spin noted, “Few bands play punk-influenced modern rock as proficiently.”

With anticipation high from fans the world over and upcoming tour dates, the band’s hopes for Forget And Not Slow Down – the first release on their new Mono Vs Stereo label – are simple.

“The songs that tend to be the fan favorites in the past are the ones about making mistakes but ultimately moving past them,” Hoopes says. “And this record has a lot of that feeling. No matter what trials and tribulations you encounter in your life, it doesn’t have to be the end of your story. You can move on and be happy and experience joy.”

Thiessen adds, “We always hope our listeners understand the resolution and positivity that the songs are alluding to. All these songs are written out of a good state of mind, and that’s what the songs are encouraging people to do - find that in their own lives. If you’re going through turmoil, you can find your way through it.”
